Note: The Isaiah Davenport House was largely responsible
for the preservation of the national treasure that is Savannah's
Historic District. In the late 1950's developers were ready to demolish
the house in order to build a parking lot, however seven local women
banded together to stop it. The group which later became the Historic
Savannah Foundation, raised $22,000 to purchase the home, which
was followed by the birth of similar restoration efforts across
the Historic District. A Federal style built in 1820, the home was
used by builder Isaiah Davenport as a showcase for his work, displaying
quite delicate and ornate plaster work throughout in addition to
a lovely adjoining garden. The Davenport House is open from 10:00
AM- 4:00 PM Monday through Saturday and 1:00 pm - 4:00 Pm on Sundays.
Admission costs are $7 for adults and $3.50 for children. |
